Remote Commissioning of a Special-Purpose Machine
A machine commissioned at the end customer's site with the control engineer 8,000 km away and the customer's own fitter on the machine.
Challenge
A machine had to be commissioned at an end customer's site on a fixed date. Travel was not practical within the schedule, and the machine could not ship without a completed commissioning.
Solution
Commissioning over an industrial VPN with the customer's fitter on the machine. The session plan was agreed in advance step by step, so the person on site always knew what was about to move and what to watch for.
Result
Commissioning completed on schedule across four sessions. The fitter, who had no PLC experience, was able to carry out every physical step from the agreed plan.
Engineering Work
- Remote PLC Debugging
- Servo Parameter Setup
- HMI Commissioning
- I/O Verification
- Operator Handover
Remote commissioning succeeds or fails on preparation. The I/O check was scripted as a checklist the fitter worked through, signal by signal, before anything was allowed to move under power.
Sessions were kept to three hours. Longer than that and the person on site gets tired, which is when mistakes reach the hardware.
